Gernika- To there & beyond

The reconstructed church at Gernika is a triumph of the human spirit. It was moving to see.

Earlier in the day I experienced the most serene Camino walk . The people of Markina and Gernika put much effort to ensure wandering pilgrims are well supported- the signs and the path were clear and the landscape was dreamlike at times

Blending old with modern post Civil War reconstruction

Even a medieval iron foundry!

Then Gernika appeared and as I drew closer the ‘necessary modern’ became starker and starker.

And it reached a climax in the square just below the reconstructed cathedral - thinking of Picasso’s work and experiencing this place and seeing this mural was overwhelming.

I decided I had to walk on, I just had to. The next albergue was up the mountain about 1-2 hours away.
Off I went

Another example of the human spirit

I couldn’t book ahead - I just hoped there would be a bed - there was

I showered, had a beer and played the uke. The hospitalero is keen for  me to play after dinner -
We’ll see 🎸

The dinner was communal and delicious, and everyone joined in the music 🎶
