Comillas to Unquera - Return to Camino

Drinking Arujo at 10am - along with coffee, cake and chocolate given to us by a kind farmer as we sheltered in his garage during a rainstorm wasn’t the return to the Camino that I expected but that’s what happened- sometimes one just needs to accept the unexpected.

I left my beachside pension at Comillas  just before dawn, had some breakfast,  and headed out of town past the palace of that Marquis guy who did so well in Cuba.

Everything was fine - it was cool- the ocean came back.

And then the clouds began to gather- I was worried my calls to Carlos for a Soul Sacrifice would not be enough to stop me getting drenched.

But just on the other side of town, Carlos came good - the farmer and his shed appeared - there were already two peregrinos there - Barbara from Alicante and Iris from Barcelona.

With the rain pelting the roof I took out the uke and played ‘here comes the sun’ and what do you know- the sky started to clear - it was hilarious- the farmer wanted to keep topping up the Arujo- but sadly my work here was done and it was time to go.
Passing through a golf course designed by a famous Spanish golfer,

A building site . . .

Late morning I reached San Vicente de la Barquera,

In the distance the Picos Europa mountains were visible. It was a clear, even serene, solo walk at times.

The lunch stop was busy- lots of people passing through

Good to note the Cantabrian authorities care about us - first sign in more than 400kms (🙏)

The gentle pace of afternoon continued. This shot really typified it for me.

‘I know the boats need fixing- but manana, manana’

I walked along the river to my hostel, checked in and watched the flow - it was a good day to be back on the way.

  2. The camino gives you what you need. Bless that farmer and the wild use playing peregrino that you keep bumping in to. Love the typical shot - what a place! BC Neils
