Castro Udiales to the Streets of Laredo
Marty Robbins sang a song about today- I felt I was the main character at times 🥹
What a walk - I was alive every minute immersed in the weather and the landscape - but it was tough.
High cliff plateau rain and wind, an angry ocean and rocky climbs and descents blended with the all too brief respite of shady lee-side pathways.
Wouldn’t have missed it for quids!
Dawn - ‘oh no, it’s raining again’ 🎶
Bleak and getter wetter
A strange powerful beauty - beginning to feel like a slow wet snail. Then coffee and cake and a welcoming bar three hours in.
Freeway, wire and a distant town and sea
Climbing again - why so many rocks por favor?
And looking over my wet shoulders
Laredo appears in the distance
Still raining but I think it’s beginning to clear
I’m here! And on my way to the Casa de Trinidad- a hostel/convent run by Franciscan nuns, but first I went by St Mary of the Assumption- a 13th century church and I remembered lots of things
Then it was time to stop- I’d reached my destination
Get settled, and recovered
Then I headed to Mass - yes it felt right - yep 👍
The nuns (beautiful voices) said and sang blessing for pilgrims at the end - there were three of us and we each received a gift to help us on the way. Moving, emotional
The image from 1210, the gift symbolises equality, freedom and love among people - says it all really.
Hola Miguel, mate what a day! Heavy weather, heavy track, 'heavy' heart. This path sounds exacting. Glad there was a warm stop along the way and a warm welcome at the close of day. Buen camino, amigo, Neils
